In the Spring of 2003, thirteen MA and MFA students in the San Diego State University English Department came together with a common goal: to provide an opportunity for emerging writers to see their work in print. In doing so, we also hoped to faciliate a greater artistic dialogue within the surrounding community.
In view of our limited resources, we originally limited our submission base to an area loosely defined as the "Sonoran Desert." In this way, we could take advantage of the rich crosscultural frontera with Mexico as well as include the chaotic interplay of Los Angeles and the deserts of San Diego and southwestern Arizona. And thus, our first issue, Aleph, was born.
Now that almost all of us have moved on from SDSU and carried our writing bones to new frontiers, we're expanding the submission area to include any area we can reach. We're excited that word about our little magazine is spreading, and hope that each year brings us a few more faithful contributors and readers.
We are proud to put our names on what we think is a beautiful object of art. Art is a dialogue between artist and audience, and it is our hope that in our pages you will begin new conversations, or hear the strains of forgotten ones.
